Introducing the latest in cosmetic sculpting!

Sculptra Aesthetic is a facial injectable made from Poly-L-Lactic acid which helps to replace lost collagen and thicken the skin of the face. As one ages, collagen production decreases which results in more visible wrinkles and facial hollowness.  Other injectable fillers will only correct specific wrinkles on the face. A face lift will only pull the skin tighter. Sculptra is unique in that it replaces overall volume in the face, which contributes to an overall natural, youthful appearance without looking “done.”

How does it work?
Sculptra is a liquid injected into the skin of the cheeks and temples.  Pts may feel slight discomfort during and after injection. Results will emerge over the next several months over the course of several sessions. (3 is average). Results then last for 2+ years with only touch-up sessions needed to maintain results.

Kybella is the first and only FDA approved injectable drug that eliminates unwanted fat to the submental fat, otherwise known as “double chin” or “turkey neck.” Submental fullness can be due to genetics, weight gain, or aging. Previously, the only way to treat this area was liposuction or jaw surgery.

How does it work?
A chemical ingredient called deoxycholic acid is injected into the fat beneath your skin. Deoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. Once injected, Kybella begins to destroy fat cells immediately. - Patients report a slight burning sensation during treatment that lasts for approximately 10 minuets. Full results will be noted about 2-3 mo. After injection. Multiple treatment sessions may be required for desired results.

Clarisonic - Is it worth it?

The Clarisonic is a cleaning brush that gently exfoliates, stimulates circulation, cleans deep pores, and helps yours skin care products to penetrate and work more effectively. And, there is now a new "replacement brush" to deep clean pores for those with ollier skin and large pores.

Have you ever heard of the sonic toothbrush before? This is the same technology, but designed to be used on the skin. Regular cleansing can sometimes leave behind dirt and oil trapped in pores. This build-up can make your skin appear dull and the efficacy of your skin care products. The Clarisonic Cleansing System uses sonic frequency of more than 300 movements per second, which "removes 6x more makeup and 2x more dirt and oil than cleansing with your hands alone." Patients who have purchased the Clarisonic say they love the way their skin feels and we often hear it is almost like giving yourself a mini facial right at home.

You can buy the Clarisonic at the dermatologist office. There are versions sold in retail shops, however, when purchased in our office you have the benefit of a 2 year warranty that is not offered in stores. The Clarisonic Smart Profile version offers 4 speeds and turbo for body. It will auto adjust for even cleansing. The Smart Profile has more power for added massage and includes 2 brush heads. The Mia 2 has a delicate speed for fragile skin and universal speed for normal skin. It loosens and removes dirt. The Mia 2 comes with a travel case and in a variety of colors and designs (great for teens to get in the habit of caring for their skin). New to the Clarisonic skin scene is the Alpha Fit men's cleansing device. The Alpha Fit removes dirt, oil, and sweat and helps tp minimize pores. With daily cleansing, it allows for a closer shave as well as power cleansing for beards.

Off the beaten path but still for the face is the Clarisonic Opal. The Opal is a much smaller device that improves the absorption of eye serums and wrinkle creams. It also reduces puffiness under the eyes and minimizes dark circles. It has sonic technology like the Clarisonic cleansing system, and gently taps the skin around your eyes at 125 sonic movements per second. It will help reduce the look of fine lines and wrinkles, firming and hydrating for younger looking skin. It can be used both AM and PM.

Clarisonic also offers a body brush attachment, which is a slightly larger and more abrasive bush to exfoliate the skin on your chest, shoulders, and/or back, especially if you're prone to clogged pores and acne breakouts in these areas. With the exception of the Opal, all Clarisonic devices are waterproof and can be used in the showe. There are a variety of different brush heads varying from sensitiveto deep cleaning, depending on your needs and are easily changed to suit your particular need.

All Clarisonic devices have a timing system built in to help you spend the correct amount of time cleaning each section of your face. 20 seconds for your forehead, 20 seconds for your nose/chin area, an 10 secondson each cheek. Some Clarisonic devices come with a cleanser, but you can use any facial cleanser with thes system, even a bar of soap.

Although it is a bit of a financial investment upfront, you only need to buy it once and can use it twice a day for years to come. You will just need to replace the brush head every few months, which typically costs around $25. It also makes for a great gift.

In conclusion, we think the Clarisonic is worth it!

Put your best face forward

Acne is the most common skin condition in the United States. All teenagers get some degree of acne. An estimated 30% of adults can also have acne. Dermatologists know that letting acne runs its course is not always the best advice.

Here's why:

  • Many effective treatments are available.
  • Treating acne often boosts a person’s self-esteem.
  •  Without treatment, dark spots and permanent scars can appear on the skin as acne clears.

First, the facts: breakouts are brought on by biological factors like genetics and hormones, which can put oil-producing glands in overdrive and cause dead cells and bacteria to build up beneath the skin's surface. Topical and oral medications can be used on their own or combined to increase effectiveness. Topical treatment for acne includes creams, lotions, gels, and solutions. This does not mean that every acne treatment works for everyone who has acne. But it does mean that virtually every case of acne can be controlled.  Dermatologist-grade chemical peels and  blue light therapy are other options to consider when trying get acne under control. These can both be done in the dermatologist's office and some insurance plans may cover these treatments.

Benefits of a Dermatologist’s Help
Getting the acne under control has benefits. It reduces the risk of scarring. The longer the acne persists, the more likely it is to cause scarring. Gaining control over acne also can improve one’s quality of life. Research shows that older adults report more negative effects on their quality of life from acne than do younger people.

If over-the-counter acne treatments and good skin care have failed to clear the acne, do not get discouraged. Seeing a dermatologist can give you peace of mind. The lesions may not be acne. Other skin conditions resemble acne. A dermatologist can tell. If acne is the problem, different medication may be required. Dermal Fillers

The last decade has seen tremendous growth, not only in the number of FDA-approved products, but also in the number of patients seeking these treatments. Approximately 2 million soft tissue filler procedures were performed in the United States in 2012 by both physicians and nurse injectors.  Hyaluronic acid (HA) is the most frequently used agent in the United States (87% of all soft tissue filler procedures), (Hyaluronic acid also known as hyaluronan or hyaluronate, is a carbohydrate, more specifically a  mucopolysaccharide occurring naturally throughout the human body.) There has been a 38% increase in its popularity since 2004. In fact, HA has become the most commonly used filler worldwide. Not all injectables are created equal, however, and no filler is ideal, nor can a single filler meet every patient's wishes and expectations.

Derma fillers help to diminish facial lines and restore volume and fullness in the face. As we age, our faces naturally lose subcutaneous fat. The facial muscles are then working closer to the skin surface, so smile lines and crow’s feet become more apparent. The facial skin also stretches a bit, adding to this loss of facial volume. Other factors that affect the facial skin include sun exposure, heredity, and lifestyle.

Derma fillers can be used to:

  • Plump thin lips
  • Enhance shallow contours
  • Soften facial creases and wrinkles

Derma fillers can be very helpful in those with early signs of aging.

Here at Arizona Premier Dermatology the fillers we specialize in are Juvederm Ultra XC, Juvederm Ultra Plus XC, Juvederm Voluma, and Restylane Silk.

Juvederm Ultra XC is used for mild to moderate lines an folds.  The results last up to 1 year.

Juvederm Ultra Plus XC is for moderate to severe lines and folds.  Results vary, but typically last 1 year.

Juvederm Voluma is for subcutaneous, deep injection areas.  Voluma can last up to 24 months.

Restylane Silk is new to the market.  This product is used to plump the tiny lines around the mouth.

In a consultation with one of our providers we can address your expectations help you explore which treatment options are best for you.

INNOpen is a fractional micro-needling device that works to tighten, lift and rejuvenate the skin. It is effective in reducing fine lines and wrinkles, stretch marks, surgical and acne scars. INNOpen uses multiple needles that vertically pierce the skin. This creates micro-injuries to the skin, stimulating new collagen production. The automatic vibrating function of the INNOpen also increases absorption of products, while reducing pain and discomfort.

Unlike dermal rollers, INNOpen causes significantly less trauma and skin damage. Treatments are far more comfortable by comparison enabling safer and more effective skin rejuvenation.

Restylane Silk is the first and only product specifically designed to treat the lips and lines around the mouth. Many patients want to address the wrinkles in the lip and the vertical "barcode" lines that appear around the mouth with age, but want a natural look without the extra volume. Restylane Silk not only helps smooth wrinkles and lines, but also softly restores lip shape and enhances definition without over-plumping.
